History

Harley-Davidson® began with a drawing on 20-year-old William S. Harley’s desk. His original plan was for a single-cylinder, 116cc engine that could be strapped onto his pedal bike. Soon, Harley teamed up with his childhood buddy, Arthur Davidson, to design a bike. The initial model turned out to be so weak, it couldn’t manage to push a rider up a hill. The two learned a very valuable lesson: power is crucial. They worked on a newer, large engine design that could be used on a bike without any pedals. They released their first true motorcycle in 1904.

In 1906, the duo had successfully opened their first factory. This is when Harley-Davidson® really got its footing and began the gradual climb to becoming a top contender in today’s motorcycle industry. During this time, they developed a V-Twin engine that would greatly increase the power of their bikes. By 1911, they had improved a model to introduce to the public that effectively doubled the horsepower of their previous single-cylinder models. It was smooth cruising from there. Harley-Davidson® was the superior force in motorcycle racing among American brands.
