The Basics
Softail motorcycles are the opposites of hardtail bikes. While hardtail models don't have a suspension on the rear end, Softail motorcycles feature a rear suspension system that absorbs impacts and enables you to enjoy a smoother ride. This makes these models a perfectly comfortable option for riding on rough terrain and going on road trips throughout the countryside.
The History
Harley-Davidson Softail motorcycles have been a vital part of the company’s range of iconic bikes since the early 1980s. However, the design process was started much earlier in the 1970s. Bill Davis, an engineer and enthusiastic Harley-Davidson motorcycle rider, created the initial design in his home garage in St. Louis, MO. He built a unique cantilevered swingarm that twisted at the bottom and leaped out at the top with springs hidden under the seat. Although he had a successful meeting with Willie G. Davidson soon after, the company did not buy his designs and patents until several years later.
Davis continued to improve on the design, and in 1982, Harley-Davidson bought his designs and patents.
Harley-Davidson® Softail® Motorcycle Models
Ever since the Softail motorcycle was introduced, it continued to be one of the most popular models in the Harley-Davidson brand lineup. However, in 2018, the company merged the Softail line with the Dyna® range, creating a storm of sorts in the industry. This merger gave riders a high-performing bike that featured a classic design and outstanding handling.
The newly-created range took off within a short period, and it is still enjoying its popularity far and wide.
When exploring Softail motorcycles for your rides, you will often come across the various models, including the:
